Zimbabwe Travel Inspiration: Design Insights from My Journey

by Rebecca Pogonitz  - August 21, 2025

Inspiration is all around us! Not just in the physical things we see and experience, but also in the daily interactions with strangers we encounter or with people we know well. Sometimes, just a few exchanged words can spark joy and inspire us to hold tight to hope, faith, and love.

This month, I travelled to Zimbabwe and discovered an abundance of design inspiration. From the places we stayed and the textiles, crafts, and artifacts we explored, to that ever-present sense of being one with nature, every moment filled me up.

Yet beyond the beauty, it was the conversations with my travel mates and the locals who so generously shared their stories that brought me even deeper joy, love, and gratitude. My cup overflowed more than once, and tears of joy often flowed among us.

Why Travel to Zimbabwe?

This adventure was made possible through PowerHouse SMART, the Luxury Design, Build & Real Estate networking organization I’ve been honored to help lead for the past 10 years. The PHS Africa Impact Trip was coordinated by Vicki Bachmann, former VP of Partnerships at MATTER, a philanthropic organization funding community impact initiatives across Africa.

Vicki connected us to an extraordinary network of African leaders, including our gracious host, Blessing, founder of Love For Africa. Together, we visited community initiatives in Victoria Falls such as WILD HOPE, a safe haven supporting mental health and literacy for at-risk youth. We also journeyed through the breathtaking Victoria Falls (even swimming to its edge!) and spent time on safari, where animals wandered freely through our camp.

And, as part of this journey, after connecting with the local design build community, I am excited to be co-creating another PowerHouse SMART Chapter in Victoria Falls, expanding our network of inspiration, education, and collaboration.

The Journey Within

Traveling in a group was new for me, and I embraced it with an open heart. I committed to showing up as my authentic self, sharing openly when I felt moved by beauty, and taking space for myself when needed. Yes, I experienced a few moments of “vulnerability hangover,” but my travel companions were so warm and open-hearted that I quickly found my balance again. 🙂

The fruits of my daily mind, body, and soul practices over the past eight months seemed to ripen right before my eyes. Time and time again, I stood in awe and gratitude, knowing that this was the inspiration I had so deeply needed. And now, it’s the inspiration I am eager to infuse into my work at GOGO.
